Punjab - Shaheed Bhai Kanwaljit Singh Ji

Shaheed Bhai Kanwaljit Singh Ji

kabeeraa marathaa marathaa jag muaa mar bh n jaanai koe
Kabeer, the world is dying - dying to death, but no one knows how to truly die.

aisee maranee jo marai bahur n maranaa hoe
Whoever dies, let him die such a death, that he does not have to die again.

Shaheed Bhai Kamaljeet Singh (1978-2007)

Shaheed Bhai Kamaljeet Singh (1978-2007) was born in village Jogimajra near Koop Kallan (Malerkota, District Sangrur) in the house of Sardar Bant Singh and Sardarni Malkeet Kaur. Bhai Sahib left behind his elderly parents, Brother Jasveer Singh, two sisters (both married), his wife – Bibi Parminder Kaur and his six month old daughter Manjot Kaur.
Bhai Kamaljeet Singh was a Gursikh of very high caliber and was fully devoted to Sikhi. Bhai Sahib was serving as a member of twenty-one member executive committee of Bhai Ghaniya Ji Seva Dal (Reg) Sangrur. Bhai Sahib took an active role in religious programs held throughout Punjab with complete dedication and at numerous times, he was also included in the Punj Pyare at amrit sanchaars held in Sangrur. Bhai Sahib affectionately adorned the baana of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and at the time he was martyred, he was fully dressed in Gursikhi attire.
It is worth mentioning that on May 17, 2007, when Sikh Sangat of Sunam and Sangrur was returning from Damdama Sahib after attending the meeting held by Takhat Jathedars, several Dera Sacha Sauda followers challenged them at Mor Mandi. The Sikh Sangat was under the mandate of Akal Takhat Sahib to maintain peace, thus the calls of the Dera followers were ignored.
According to close associates of Bhai Kamaljeet Singh – Bhai Manjeet Singh and Bhai Amritpal Singh, after returning to Sunam, the local Sikh Sangat approached Dera Sacha Sauda (Bathinda) to hold a peaceful protest. The main motive of the protest was to acquire an apology from the Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim. As a response, the Sacha Sauda followers threw glass bottles - some broken, while others filled with petrol (gasoline). Despite the mischievous response of the dera followers, the Sikh Sangat continued protesting while chanting ‘Satnam Waheguru’.
A few moments later, the actions of Sacha Sauda followers took a more violent turn as they started firing gunshots at the Sikh Sangat. As a consequence of the shooting, Bhai Balbir Singh was severely injured while Bhai Kamaljeet Singh passed away at spot after being hit in the chest.
Talking to the press regarding the killing of their son, parents of Bhai Kamaljeet Singh said that they are proud as their son became a martyr for the cause of Sikh Nation. They asked the State and Centre Government to invest more interest in solving the situation as soon as possible as the rising number of deras in Punjab is a big concern for the Sikhs.

Shaheed Bhai Kanwaljeet Singh Jee honoured by Canadian Sikhs

Sangat Bans Parkash and Sukhbir Badal from Ontario Gurdwaras
Missisauga, Ontario (KP) - In response to the sudden violent condition in Punjab caused by Dera ‘Sacha’ (Jhoottha) Sauda, concerened Sikhs in Canada gathered to express their disgust with the Punjab government, the S.G.P.C and Dera ‘Sacha’ (Jhoottha) Sauda. Countless Sikhs of different Panthic Jathebandees voiced their opinions on the matter at Dixie Road Gurduara on May 19th at a meeting organized by the Ontario Sikh and Gurduara Committee (O.S.G.C).
At this gathering, the Sangat passed several resolutions such as asking Sree Akal Takht Sahib to recognize the sacrifice of Bhai Kanwaljeet Singh Jee and declare him a Shaheed (Martyr). Additionally, the O.S.G.C has promised to support Shaheed Bhai Kanwaljeet Singh Jee’s family. Arrangements have also been made for an Akhand Paatth Sahib to take place at Dixie Gurduaaraa in memory of Bhai Sahib. Furthermore, they requested the S.G.P.C. to provide jobs for Bhai Sahib’s family and those who were wounded by followers of Gurmeet Ram Raheem.
The Sangat also decided that the S.G.P.C should find Deray which go against Sree Akaal Takhat Sahib’s Maryada and have them shut down. A notice regarding the actions of the Sirsa Dera chief will be given, by the O.S.G.C, to the "Sanyukat Raashtar Sangh", as well as the Canadian and Indian Governments.
In another resolution, the Sangat demanded that the Punjab government take steps towards solving the current problem in Punjab. The damning pictures of Prakash and Sukhbir Badal sitting inside Dera ‘Sacha’ (Jhoottha) Sauda were also shown to the Sangat. In response to this the O.S.G.C. recognizing Prakash Badal’s true character, decided to boycott him and his son. Despite much argument; in the end, Chairman Harbans Singh Jandali had to read out this resolution because of pressure from the Sangat.
Upon reading out these resolutions, the Sangat bellowed Jakairay and raised their hands, showing support for the resolutions that were passed.

Punjab - Breaking News - The latest about the wrongdoings of the Dera

All Truth about Sacha Sauda; Inside details of his wrongdoings
A SADHVI's letter to PMO dated December, 2002.
Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee
Prime Minister New Delhi

I am a girl hailing from Punjab State. I have been serving as a 'Sadhwi' in 'Dera Sacha Sauda', Sirsa (Haryana) for the last five years. Beside me, there are hundreds of others girl here, who serve for 18 hours daily. But we are sexually exploited here. The 'Dera Maharaj' Gurmit Singh rapes the girls in the 'dera'. I am a graduate. My family has blind faith in the 'Maharaj' (Gurmit Singh). It was at my family's bidding that I became a 'Sadhwi'. Two years after I became a 'Sadhwi', a special woman-disciple of Maharaj Gurmit Singh came to me one night at 10' o' clock and said that the Maharaj had summoned me to his room. I felt elated that Maharaj himself sent for me. I was going to him for the first time. After climbing the stairs, when I went into his room, I saw that he was holding a remote in his hand and was watching a blue film on the TV. Beside his pillow on the bed, lay a revolver. Seeing all this, I was frightened and became nervous. I had never imagined that Maharaj was a man of this type. Maharaj switched off the TV and seated me beside him. He offered me water and said that he had called me because he considered me very close to him. This was my first experience. Maharaj took me in his embrace and said that he loved me from the core of his heart. He also said that he wanted to make love with me. He told me that at the time of becoming his disciple, I had dedicated my wealth, body and soul to him and he had accepted my offering. When I objected he said, "There is no doubt that I am God." When I asked if God also indulges in such acts, he shot back:
1. Sri Krishna too was God and he had 360 'gopis' (milkmaids) with whom he enacted 'Prem lila' (love drama). Even then people regarded him as God. So there is nothing to be surprised at it.
2. I can kill you with this revolver and bury you here. The members of your family are my devoted followers and they have blind faith in me. You know it very well that members of your family cannot go against me.
3. I have considerable influence with governments also. Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana and central Ministers come to pay obeisance to me. Politicians take help from us. They cannot take any action against me. We will get the members of your family dismissed from govt. jobs and I will get them killed by my 'Sewadars' (servants). We will leave no evidence of their murder. You know that earlier also we got the 'dera' Manager Fakir Chand killed by goondas. His murder remains untraced till this day. The 'dera' has a daily income of one crore rupees with which we can buy leaders, police and the judges.

After this, the Maharaj raped me. The Maharaj has been doing this with me for the last three years. My turn comes after every 25-30 days. Now I have learnt that before me too, the Maharaj had been raping the girls he had summoned. Most of these women are now 35 to 40 years old and they are past the age of marriage. They have no other option but to remain in the 'dera'. Most of the girls are educated --- B.A., M.A., B.Ed, etc. But they are living a life of hell in the 'dera', simply because the members of their families have blind faith in the Maharaj. We wear white clothes, tie a scarf on the head, cannot even look at men and as per Maharaj's commands, talk with men from a distance of 5-10 feet. To the people we look like 'devis' (goddesses), but we are living like harlots. This time I tried to tell my family that all was not well at the 'dera'. But they rebuked me saying that there was no better place than the 'dera' for here they were in the company of God (Maharaj). They said that I had formed a bad notion about the 'dera' and that I should recite the name of 'Satguru'. I am helpless here because I have to obey every command of the Maharaj. No girl is permitted to talk with another. According to the commands of the Maharaj, girls are not permitted to talk to their families even on the telephone. If any girl talks about the reality of the 'dera', she is punished according to Maharaj's commands. Sometimes ago, a Bhatinda girl revealed the wrong doings of the Maharaj. At this, all the women disciples gave her a sound thrashing. Because of a fracture in the backbone, she is now bed-ridden. Her father gave up the service in the 'dera' and went home. For fear of the Maharaj and his own disgrace, he is not revealing anything.
Similarly, a Kurukshetra girl has also left the 'dera' and has gone home. When she narrated the events in the 'dera' to her family, her brother who worked in the 'dera' gave up his job. When a Sangrur girl left the 'dera', went home and narrated the wrong-doings in the 'dera' to the people, the dera's armed Sewadars/ hooligans reached the girl's house and threatened to kill her and warned her not to leak anything about the 'dera'.
Similarly girls from Mansa, Ferozepur, Patiala and Ludhiana districts are afraid of revealing anything about the 'dera'. Although they have left the 'dera', yet they do not say anything for fear of loosing their lives. Similarly, girls from Sirsa, Hissar, Fatehabad, Hanuman Garh and Meerut disclose as to what happened to them in the 'dera.
If I reveal my name, I and my family will be killed. I want to reveal this truth for the benefit of the common man, because I cannot bear all this tension and harassment. My life is in danger. If a probe is conducted by the press or some govt. agency, 40 to 50 girls living in the 'dera' will come forward to reveal the truth. We can also be medically examined to find out whether we are still celibate disciples or not. If we are no longer virgins, the matter should be gone into to find out who has violated our chastity. The truth will then come out that Maharaj Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh of 'Sacha Sauda' has ruined our lives.
Murder of Journalist
The Dera Sacha Sauda in Haryana and its head are under investigation in connection with the murder of a journalist and charges of sexual exploitation of women followers of the sect.

Ram Chandra Chatrapati, editor of Poora Sach, who died of bullet injuries.THE death, on November 21, 2002 of Ram Chandra Chatrapati, the 53-year-old editor of Poora Sach (Complete Truth), an evening daily from Sirsa, Haryana, at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi went largely unnoticed by the mainstream media. On the night of October 24, two men riding a motorcycle, claiming to be followers of a religious sect called Dera Sacha Sauda, had shot at him four times from point-blank range. The sect, headquartered in Sirsa, claims a following of more than one crore people and has branches in many States. The Master of the Dera is Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh Ji, popularly known as Maharaj.
The activities of the Dera attracted attention in May after an anonymous letter alleging sexual exploitation by Maharaj came to light. The issue was reported by several newspapers, and Chatrapati had consistently written about the Dera's activities since then. The letter, written by a female disciple of Maharaj, or a sadhvi, was addressed to the Prime Minister and its copies had been marked to the Union Home Minister, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Haryana Chief Minister, the Sirsa Superintendent of Police, the National Human Rights Commission, newspapers and women's and social organisations. It was alleged in the letter that several girls had been subject to exploitation.
The sadhvi stated that she was a graduate and had been in the Dera (spread over 700 acres, or 280 hectares) for the last five years. Her family, being very religious, had sent her there to serve as a sadhvi. She alleged that Gurmit Singh threatened to kill her if she reported the goings-on in the Dera to anyone. He also boasted, as stated in the letter, about the influence he wielded with politicians in Punjab and Haryana.
It is well known that leading politicians from both the States have visited the Dera to seek the blessings of Maharaj. Prominent among them are former Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala.
The letter alleged sexual exploitation of several girls, many of whom had post-graduate and even M.Phil degrees. They were "leading a life in hell due to the superstitious nature and dead faith of their family members", it said, and added that many girls from Mansa, Ferozepur, Patiala and Ludhiana districts of Punjab had returned to their homes but kept quiet out of fear. The three-page letter in Hindi also detailed how a sadhvi from Bhatinda in Punjab, was beaten up by the rest of the sadhvis, when she tried to disclose the deeds of Maharaj. Some 45 girls were living in fear and insecurity but were ready to disclose everything in confidence, the letter stated.
On September 3, taking suo motu notice of the letter, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the District and Sessions Judge to conduct an inquiry. In his report, the District and Sessions Judge suggested that the matter be investigated by a Central agency. The High Court, taking cognisance of the recommendation and the serious nature of allegations, referred the matter to the CBI on September 24 and directed it to submit a report within six months.
The CBI is bound to take a close look at the statements given to the police by the two men who were caught and handed over to the police by the public for allegedly shooting Chatrapati. During questioning they reportedly said that they were Dera followers from Punjab and had been sent by Kishan Lal, a senior functionary of the Dera, to silence Chatrapati. Kishan Lal was also taken into custody.
Chatrapati battled for his life for 28 days, first at the Rohtak Medical College and then at the Apollo Hospital. In fact, several local journalists had received threats, but no one took serious note of them. However, Chatrapati did write to the Sirsa Superintendent of Police asking for protection.
Meanwhile, on November 3, the former sarpanch of Khanpur Koliyan in Kurukshetra district told newspersons that his son had been murdered by followers of the Dera because of the anonymous letter. The murder took place on July 10, he said, and claimed that when the police failed to nab the killers, he wrote to the Haryana Chief Minister for a CBI inquiry and sent copies of the letter to the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and the State Home Secretary, among others. The CBI will investigate this case as well.
The motive for the boy's murder and other activities of the Dera are the topics of discussion in Sirsa and surrounding districts. Chatrapati, also being a poet imbued with a reformist zeal, perhaps wrote a bit more consistently than the rest of his fraternity. By targeting him and also by attacking the office of Lekha Jokha, an evening newspaper published from Fatehabad, the Dera seemed to be sending a message to the journalistic fraternity. A total of 11 journalists have been given police protection. Political parties and journalist unions of all hues have condemned the actions of the Dera.
The Dera Sacha Sauda was set up in 1948 by Shah Mastana from Baluchistan. Conceived as a centre of spiritual inquiry and learning, the Dera stood as a symbol of disagreement with all established religions and orthodoxies. Its beginnings were rooted in a liberal and progressive theology that accepted into its fold many people. This naturally attracted several people. His successor, Shah Satnam, continued the good work and a lot of branches came up in other States as well. But since 1992, when Gurmit Singh took over, the Dera began to acquire a lot of agricultural land, much of it allegedly by coercion. One of the philosophies of the Dera is that it neither receives nor gives donation.
Today the Dera owns some 700 acres, which extend to the outskirts of Sirsa town, and its spokespersons claim that the main source of revenue is agriculture. A guide points to the Dera set up by the founder, and the girls hostel, which was reportedly built in record time using free labour. What is not shown is the petrol pump, the sophisticated supermarket and a revolving restaurant, to name a few of the entrepreneurial activities of the Dera. It runs a biscuit factory and an ice factory. All this information was gleaned locally and not from the Dera.
The Dera spokesperson, Dr. Aditya Arora, an ophthalmologist, preferred to highlight its boys' school affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, its degree college affiliated to Kurukshetra University and a 175-bed hospital in Rajasthan's Ganganagar district. Ganganagar is also the birthplace of Gurmit Singh.
The Dera has 36 branches in 11 States, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. According to R.K. Soni, a sevadaar or volunteer, there are 400 sadhus and 100 sadhvis living in the Dera. "They manage on their own," said a sevadaar, rebutting the allegations of sexual exploitation.
The main mass of the Dera followers comprises peasants who claim to toil on Dera land for 18 hours a day. Dera followers claimed that the liquor mafia as well as followers of organised religion were working against Maharaj. They regretted the murder of Chatrapati but claimed that he "wrote all kinds of things".
Arora claims that the Sessions Judge who conducted the inquiry did not meet any of the relevant persons in the Dera. Chatrapati had been writing unprovoked, false and baseless reports, he maintained. "There was a difference between a sex scandal and an anonymous letter. The media should have made the distinction clear as it involved the feelings of 1.25 crore people," he said. Deputy Commissioner D. Suresh was requested to restrain Chatrapati, but nothing happened, he said. Suresh told Frontline that Dera representatives had indeed made such a request and that he had cautioned them not to take the law into their own hands. He added that his office had received several complaints against the Dera, alleging land-grabbing, drugs-peddling and tax evasion.
The Dera had done good work but all that was glossed over by the media, lamented Arora. "We don't accept charity, we are totally anti-liquor and support de-addiction. We must have enraged the liquor lobby and organised religion," he said. Arora claimed that the Dera was the premier disaster relief organisation in the country, having supported drought relief in Gujarat, flood relief in Sirsa and even in Orissa. "Please do not defame the Master," requested the doctor, who had been trained at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
A popular movement against the Dera is taking shape, with all political parties demanding a thorough investigation into its activities. In a memorandum submitted to Haryana Governor Babu Parmanand, the Haryana Patrakar Sangh, the Haryana Union of Journalists, the Chandigarh Journalists Association, the Punjab Union of Journalists, the Himachal Pradesh Working Journalists Association and the Himachal Pradesh Union of Journalists demanded a CBI probe into the functioning of the Dera, including its sources of income and a review of the firearm licences issued to Dera inmates, and provision of security to the journalists who have received threats.

Murder case against Sirsa dera chief Cong influencing probe: victim's son

Son of Ram Chandra Chatrapati.Accusing the Congress high command of influencing the ongoing probe in the murder of Ram Chander Chhatrapati, a Sirsa-based journalist, to shield the Dera Sacha Sauda chief and others involved in the case, the victim's son today alleged that the move is part of a larger conspiracy.
Addressing mediapersons today, Anshul Chhatrapati, the victim's son, alleged that the transfer of case from investigating officer, DSP Dr Armandeep Singh, to another CBI officer, DSP Satish Dagger, was an indication of tampering with the ongoing probe.
He added that the investigation into the case was about to complete at this juncture.
The CBI has been probing two cases of murder - one of Ram Chander Chhatrapati, editor of Poora Sach, and the other of Ranjit Singh, a member of the dera - and a case of sexual abuse against dera chief Gurmeet Singh on an anonymous complaint filed by a dera woman worker.
Anshul, who is now the editor of Poora Sach, alleged that members of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) had urged Congress president Sonia Gandhi to influence the CBI probe in favour of dera chief, as he had supported the Congress in the recent elections.
He alleged that the PPCC had entered into a deal with the dera chief before elections, wherein dera chief's support would have earned him help from the party in cases of murder and sexual abuse filed against him.
Anshul flanked by Thakur Shiv Ram Singh, sarpanch of Bajekan village in Sirsa, and advocate Lekh Raj said: "Due to the interference of the PPCC, the probe, which was nearing completion, is now going at snail's pace. As Dr Armandeep was handling the case, the transfer of the case to another official will only affect the probe adversely. I demand that all three cases be handled by Dr Armandeep."
He asserted that as the case was being influenced by politicians, he would approach general secretaries of both the CPI and the CPM, besides meeting Sonia Gandhi and other high-ups, to get justice.
Earlier in the day, confusion prevailed among mediapersons when Anshul and his associates went to the CBI office in Sector 30 and did not respond to calls made by them.
He showed up after much delay and cleared the doubts of mediapersons.
He said he had gone to discuss the case with CBI SP
Son to move HC against transfer of caseIn journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati's murder case, his son Anshul Chhatrapati will approach the high court against the transfer of the case from CBI official, Dr Armandeep Singh, DSP, to another official when the inquiry about to complete.
Anshul Chhatrapati said Dr Armandeep Singh had been investigating the murder charges levelled against the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda.
Before the official was able to submit his findings to the court, the case was handed over to another official allegedly following pressure by the Congress-led UPA government.
"I will move a plea in the court to direct the CBI functionary to explain under what circumstances the case was transferred when the inquiry was about to complete" he said.
Anshul Chhatrapati, also editor of evening newspaper Poora Sach, said, "The case is under the jurisdiction of the court. But the CBI senior functionary transferred the case to DSP Satish Daggar at this critical stage without informing the court. Dr Armandeep Singh had investigated the matter in detail and was to submit a complete report on April 16.
But before he could reveal truth, he was moved out", added Anshul.
It is learnt that Punjab Congress MLAs had requested Sonia Gandhi to favour the head of Dera Sacha Sauda in the CBI inquiry pending against him.
The MLAs highlighted the influence of the dera in the Punjab Assembly elections.
Ram Chander Chaterpatti, Poora SachNovember 21, 2002, Sirsa
Chaterpatti, editor of the Hindi-language newspaper Poora Sach, died in a New Delhi hospital of injuries sustained in an assassination attempt made a month earlier.
On October 24, a gunman fired several shots at Chaterpatti, a journalist based in Sirsa, a town in the northern state of Haryana. Chaterpatti was taken to an area hospital but was later transferred to the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi.
Police arrested three suspects, including the alleged gunman and a leader of the Sirsa-based religious sect Dera Sacha Sauda, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. Officials said that Dera Sacha Sauda members are believed to have ordered Chaterpatti's murder in reprisal for the journalist's reporting on sexual abuse and other crimes allegedly committed at the group's compound in Sirsa.
A delegation of journalists, including the president of the regional journalists' group Haryana Patrakar Sangh and representatives of India's National Union of Journalists, met with the director general of police in Haryana on the day of Chatterpatti's death, November 21, to press authorities to bring the journalist's killers to justice. The delegation also complained that several journalists in the area have received death threats for reporting on the activities of Dera Sacha Sauda.

Strike by Sikhs hits Indian state

Many of the Sikh protesters have been armedCities and towns across the northern Indian state of Punjab are shut in response to a general strike called by the Sikh community.
Security forces have been deployed and businesses and schools are closed for the day amid fears of violence.
Sikhs are demanding an apology from the leader of a religious sect who appeared in an advert dressed like one of the Sikh religion's most important figures.
Sikh community leaders say it is an insult to their religion.
Last week, thousands took to the streets. One man was shot dead in clashes that followed.
Attempts to broker a settlement between the Sikhs and the sect have failed.
Deserted
Thousands of extra police and soldiers have been deployed across Punjab and the state's political leadership has said peace will be maintained at all costs.

DSS supporters have come from various religions
Streets in many Punjabi cities and towns are deserted.
Thousands of machine-gun wielding soldiers are on alert and the anti-riot Rapid Action Force personnel have marched through some of the sensitive areas.
In the state of Jammu, Sikhs have held protest demonstrations, burning effigies of the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) religious sect.
The DSS's leader has refused to apologise for appearing in an advertisement dressed like one of the figures most revered by Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh.
The Sikhs called it blasphemy.
Fearing possible violence by outraged Sikhs, security forces have erected barricades around the headquarters of the Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) religious sect in Sirsa town [in the neighbouring state of Haryana].
An estimated 20,000 DSS followers live on or near the campus.
The sect also has many smaller campuses across Punjab.
Appeal for calm
Sikh leaders have demanded that all campuses where sect members live be closed within a week.
The sect claims it has 20 million members worldwide and says it is not a religion but a humanitarian organisation caring for its devotees.
Analysts say the DSS action has to be seen in the context of state elections held in Punjab in February when the sect leader issued a public appeal for people to vote for the Congress party.
Religious sects have traditionally been subtle about their support for political parties - they have usually issued internal appeals asking their followers to vote for the political party of their choice.

The trouble has been brewing for days
Most Sikhs in Punjab support the state's governing party, Akali Dal.
Some analysts say Sikh leaders, angry at the direct intervention by the DSS in the elections, seized the opportunity to whip up popular sentiments of their community against the sect.
They say the latest conflict threatens to lead to a polarisation of the communities and the dispute could trigger widespread unrest.
Although peace has prevailed in the state for the last decade or so, in the 1980s and the 1990s, Punjab was the site of a violent insurgency by Sikhs who desired an independent homeland.
In 1984 Indian security forces killed many Sikh militants after they seized the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Sikh religion's most important site.
In revenge, Indira Gandhi, the then-prime minister, was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards.

Dera Sacha Sauda Sirsa- of Sexual Orgies, Intrigues and Series of Murders

The exposure started in May 2003 when on the insistence of her parents an educated girl of Bathinda offered her services to the Dera. After rendering a few months of service in the kitchen etc. she fell in the notice of dera chief Parm Sant Ram Rahim Gurmit Singh Maharaj.
Then on one day the girl was asked that it was her turn to render personal services to the Dera Chief. When she entered the private room of Baba she noticed a pistol laying on the bed and a blue movie was on the TV. When she respectfully protested Maharaj then questioned, "Did Krishan Bhagwan not played with the Gopis" and that "You are a fortunate girl to be selected as my gopi." What could the innocent girl do in that situation?
But later she secretly drafted a detailed letter on the activities of Maharaj and sent it to Prime Minister and other concerned authorities. The letter was also published in the Des Sewak of Chandigarh. The following day Dera managed all newspaper by inserting full-page advertisements i.e. the press was bribed.
The Dera representatives met the Prime Minister Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It is said a prominent leader from Punjab helped them. In the meanwhile a local small time journalist continued his crusade and was murdered by the Dera people.
Hatia-kand
Some how a rebellion in the Dera erupted on the activities of sex- maniac, the Dera Chief and one Ranjit Singh a member of 10-member kitchen cabinet of
the Dera was under suspicion. He was then allegedly murdered by Kishan lal another member of the kitchen cabinet.
The Dera Sacha Sauda in Haryana and its head are under investigation in connection with the murder of a journalist and charges of sexual exploitation of women followers of the sect.
The death, on November 21, of Ram Chandra Chatrapati, the 53-year-old editor of Poora Sach (Complete Truth), an evening daily from Sirsa, Haryana, at the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi went largely unnoticed by the mainstream media.
The issue was reported in several newspapers and Chatrapati had consistently written about the Dera's activities since then. The letter, written by a female disciple of Maharaj, or a sadhvi, was addressed to the Prime Minister and its copies had been marked to the Union Home Minister, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Haryana Chief Minister, the Sirsa Superintendent of Police, the National Human Rights Commission, newspapers and women's and social organizations.
The letter alleged sexual exploitation of several girls, many of them having post-graduate and even M. Phil degrees. They were "leading a life in hell due to the superstitious nature and dead (blind) faith of their family members", it said, and added that many girls from Mansa, Ferozepur, Patiala and Ludhiana districts of Punjab had returned to their homes but kept quiet out of fear. The three-page letter in Hindi also detailed how a sadhvi from Bhatinda in Punjab, was beaten up by some of the rest of the sadhvis, when she tried to disclose the deeds of Maharaj. Some 45 girls were living in fear and insecurity but were ready to disclose everything in confidence, the letter stated.
On September 3, taking suo motu (?) notice of the letter, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the District and Sessions Judge to conduct an inquiry. In his report, the District and Sessions Judge suggested that the matter be investigated by a Central agency. The High Court, taking cognizance of the recommendation and the serious nature of allegations, referred the matter to the CBI on September 24 and directed it to submit a report within six months.
The CBI is bound to take a close look at the statements given to the police by the two men who were caught and handed over to the police by the public for allegedly shooting of Chatrapati.
Meanwhile, on November 3, the former sarpanch of Khanpur Koliyan in Kurukshetra district told newspersons that because of the anonymous letter his son had been murdered by followers of the Dera.
Chatrapati being a poet imbued with reformist zeal wrote perhaps a bit more consistently than the rest of his fraternity. Journalists and members of political parties protested in Sirsa against the attack on Ram Chandra Chatrapati in October.
The Dera Sacha Sauda was setup by Shah Mastana from Baluchistan in 1948 AD.
What is not shown; is the petrol pump, the sophisticated supermarket and a revolving restaurant, to name a few of the entrepreneurial activities of the Dera.
Dera followers claimed that the liquor mafia as well as followers of organized religion were working against Maharaj.
He added that his office had received several complaints against the Dera, alleging land grabbing, drugs peddling and tax evasion.
The Dera had done good work but all that was glossed over by the media, lamented Arora. "We don't accept charity, we are totally anti-liquor and support de-addiction. We must have enraged the liquor lobby and organized religion," he said. Arora claimed that the Dera was the premier disaster relief organization in the country having supported drought relief in Gujarat, flood relief in Sirsa and even in Orissa. "Please do not defame the Master," requested the doctor, who had been trained at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
A popular movement against the Dera is taking shape, with all political parties demanding a thorough investigation into its activities. In a memorandum submitted to Haryana Governor Babu Parmanand, the Haryana Patrakar Sangh, the Haryana Union of Journalists, the Chandigarh Journalists Association, the Punjab Union of Journalists, the Himachal Pradesh Working Journalists Association and the Himachal Pradesh Union of Journalists demanded a CBI probe into the functioning of the Dera, including its sources of income and a review of the firearm licenses issued to Dera inmates, and provision of security to the journalists who have received threats.

Alliance: BJP talks of ‘hard decisions’

Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, May 21

Conveying its displeasure at the recent sectarian clashes in Punjab, the BJP today issued the first major warning to its alliance partner, the SAD, saying it would not hesitate to take “hard decisions” in the larger interests of the people of the state.
The obvious hint was at the BJP continuing its alliance in view of the turn of events in the past few days.
The BJP has chosen to distance itself from the stance of the hardliners among the Sikhs on the Sacha Sauda issue besides striking a tough posture on the prevailing law and order situation in the state. Political observers said the BJP’s stance would put pressure on Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal against succumbing to the demands of the hardliners.
The BJP’s central leader, R.P. Singh, told The Tribune on the phone that “nothing will matter more than peace in Punjab and the BJP will not be a party to incidents where lumpen elements openly brandish swords in the state.” Asked if the party was reviewing the alliance or thinking of giving only outside support to the SAD, R.P. Singh said: “If need be, such a step will be discussed when we feel that things are going out of control”.
Rajinder Bhandari, president of the Punjab unit of the BJP, said: “The BJP is deeply concerned over the developments and is committed to maintaining peace, harmony and brotherhood in Punjab”. In a statement here Bhandari, besides talking of “hard decisions”, said: “If anything goes wrong in any part of the state, the government headed by Parkash Singh Badal will be solely responsible and answerable”.
Bhandari, who chaired a meeting of party office-bearers today, said the events of the past few days had created apprehension in the minds of the people. The BJP would not shirk its responsibility to maintain peace. He said “the party had no objection to the bandh tomorrow as long as it remains peaceful”.

Salabatpura (Bathinda), May 21

Even as the state police authorities have made ‘foolproof’ security arrangements to meet any eventuality during the Punjab bandh call given by Akal Takht for tomorrow, more than 2000 followers of Sacha Sauda sect, who were camping in its local Dera, have left in the past 24 hours.
They are said to have left for undisclosed destinations despite the fact that two companies of Border security Force (BSF) have created a security wall in and around the Dera spread over 90 acres.
Also, the police force deployed in and around its premises has not been allowing any stranger or any new follower of Sacha Sauda sect into the local Dera.

Sikhs call for Sirsa bandh today No apology, says Dera

Kiran Deep

Tribune News Service

Sirsa, May 21

Ignoring Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's advice, the Dera Sacha Sauda again refused to tender an apology here today.
Chief spokesman of the dera Aditya Arora said Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh had expressed regret over the controversy but that failed to check the violence in Punjab and Haryana.
"If an effort is not made to understand whatever we have tried to convey, then we did not have any other way to address the issue". He said, while answering a query about the possibility of apology by the dera chief, while addressing a press conference in the dera.
He said,"We have full faith in all religion, but no one understands our feelings. We have appealed to the President and the Prime Minister to intervene on the issue. We have received response in term of that the security has been increased."
He stressed that Punjab government should sort out the issue. The government should protect the deras as there is no question of vacating the deras. "If situation arises, we have legal option to protect our rights. The attempt should have been made by the government to mediate between Sikh hardliners and the dera management to find out some solution", he added.
Meanwhile fearing attack on dera in the wake of the threat against the dera chief, the security has been further tightened. In addition to it, after the withdrawal of security guards from the dera chief security by the Punjab government, the Haryana government has provided two more gunmen for his security.
All ways led to the dera chief residence has been sealed. During nights, dera followers were holding nakas all along the roads.
The Sikh organisation has called for a bandh in Sirsa tomorrow following the edict of the Akal Takht against the dera chief after holding meeting in Chilasahib Gurdwara.
It is learnt that efforts have been made to sort out the issue with the intervention of religious leader Swami Agnivesh. He is believed to have been chosen to hold dialogue to solve the dispute.

Takht to summon Cong leaders who ‘incited trouble’

Varinder Walia
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 21

Jathedar Akal Takht Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti today said that those Sikh Congress leaders, who sided with Dera Sacha Sauda and incited trouble at Bathinda on May 14 were being identified and could be summoned before the Sikh clergy.
Replying to a question, Jathedar Vedanti said that the Congress leaders would be summoned as Sikhs because non-Sikhs could not be summoned to Akal Takht.
Earlier, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had blamed the Congress for creating a volatile situation in the state. Badal had alleged that Congress MLAs were present at a sectarian gathering at Bathinda, where the recent incidents of violence in the state began.
He said the Congress leaders had inflamed passions. The SGPC chief Avtar Singh had also charged Congress with inciting trouble in the state.
Vedanti said Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Raheem Singh had only expressed regret for imitating the 10th Sikh Guru. He said the Sacha Sauda chief should apologise unconditionally for indulging in blasphemous acts and only then will the Sikh clergy be willing to take the discussions further.
Meanwhile, Akal takht has decided that essential services like health facilities will not be made to close down during the proposed “Punjab Bandh”.
He urged the Sikh masses to remain peaceful and asked them to refrain from brandishing unsheathed swords during the bandh. Vedanti also asked the Sikhs not to use force while demanding closure of business establishments.
He said a humane approach should be adopted while enforcing the bandh.
The District Magistrate Kahan Singh Pannu has ordered closure of all schools and colleges on May 22 in the wake of the bandh call given by Akal Takht.
In yet another development, the Sikh Students Federation (Mehta) today held a silent motorcycle rally to protest against the blasphemous acts of Dera Sacha Sauda chief. The rally started from Gurdwara Shaheedan and after passing through various bazaars of the city culminated at the Golden Temple. The rallyists held placards condemning the sacrilegious acts of Dera chief demanding the release of women devotees from his clutches.
Public Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia held a meeting of Akali and SGPC leaders and urged the people to maintain peace during the bandh. He also urged people to cooperate in observing complete Punjab bandh as per the directive of the Akal Takht. The SGPC and Chief Khalsa Diwan have also ordered closure all their institutions in wake of the Punjab bandh.
Meanwhile, Dal Khalsa spokesman Kanwarpal Singh said that irrespective of religion and political ideology, Punjabis should unite to contain the activities of Dera Sacha Sauda . He alleged that the activities of Dera chief were not only detrimental for Sikh religion but also for the peace of the state. He urged that Punjabis should honour the call of Punjab Bandh, given by the Akal Takht . He said instead of creating fear psychosis, Sikh youths should persuade people for observing the bandh.
On the other hand, the police have beefed up security and a number of check posts have been put up on all the entry points of the city. The situation was defused when Kuljit Singh of Gur Khalsa Organisation postponed the proposed March to Salabatpura (a branch of Dera Sacha Sauda in Bathinda) in wake of the directive by the Akal Takht which announced that such deras be closed down by May 27.

Dera seeks President, PM's intervention to solve tangle
21 May, 2007

SIRSA: The Dera Sacha Sauda on Monday appealed to President A P J Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to mediate to solve their tangle with the Sikhs in the best interests of the country. Making the appeal through the media, Dera's chief spokesman Aditya Insaan also urged the Punjab government to observe "Raj Dharma" in the wake of Tuesday's Punjab bandh called by the Sikh high priests. The Punjab government should work honestly and protect all sections of the society, he said. Declaring that the sect would not close Deras in Punjab as directed by the Sikh priests, Insaan said that to close or not to close the Deras in Punjab was the responsibility of the Punjab government. Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Raheem Singh had expressed his regrets for all what happened and had also asserted that there was no intention to show any disrespect to the 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh by imitating any of his actions or his dress, he said. Insaan expressed his shock that the intrinsic value of Dera chief's regrets was not taken with the same spirit with which it was expressed. The Dera had full faith in the law of the land and now they shall find redressal through law, he said adding the Dera followers were not at all frightened by the events. He emphasized that their peaceful protest through blood donations, eye and body donation and other programmes in the service of the society would continue.

Punjab CM Badal promises to deal firmly with lawbreakers
21 May, 2007

CHANDIGARH: Short of asking for an apology from the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday said it is for those who have committed "sin" to see that the stand-off with the Sikh community is resolved but said his government will maintain law and order under any circumstances. As the stand-off between the two sides appeared heading for a confrontation, he parried questions at a press conference on the strategies the government would adopt on resolving it against the backdrop of the Akal Takht's demand for closure of all Deras and the call for bandh on Tuesday. "As head of the government, I should not be saying. They (the Dera) should see themselves what sin or mistake they have committed whether he (Dera head Gurmeet Ram Raheem Singh) should give an apology.....I can't say what effect it will have. All steps would be taken to restore peace and harmony," Badal said. "My duty is to maintain law and order and ensure peace in the state," he said, adding any "lawbreaker, howsoever high post he may hold, would be dealt with strictly as per law". The five Sikh high priests on Sunday gave a call for closure of all Deras in Punjab by May 27 and a bandh on Tuesday against the "blasphemy" caused by the Sirsa-based Dera chief allegedly posing as Guru Gobind Singh. Badal said it was a "big provocation" on the part of head of the Dera who he felt should show large-heartedness for resolution of the tangle. He met Governor S F R Rodrigues on Monday and said it was his duty to inform him of the situation in the state. The act of the Dera head had not only offended the Sikhs, but also members of other communities, he reiterated. He also expressed hope that all political parties, especially the ruling SAD-BJP alliance, would conduct themselves in a peaceful manner during Tuesday’s bandh. "No hooliganism from anyone and no attempt to vitiate peace in the state would be tolerated," he added. The government is fully prepared to face any situation, he said, adding security personnel including central paramilitary forces have been deployed in the state and senior civil and police officials have been directed to maintain peace at all costs. Asked about the sensitive places in the state, Badal said: "It can be any place at any time. Adequate security arrangements would be made at all places. Any lawbreaker would be dealt with strictly." On a question on display of naked swords by Sikhs, Badal said no one can display or carry any weapon, except the kirpan . "Those raising slogans for Khalistan are not our party workers. They also want to run their shop," he said.

Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh ’Insaan’ was very unlucky. When he was engaging in Guru-ninda there were some cameras that caught his blasphemy. The pictures of Mr. Insaan imitating Guru Sahib, sitting in bir-asan and preparing his ‘eternal’ jaam were flashed across the world by the major newspapers. Result: a huge uproar and anger among Sikhs followed by clashes, injuries and deaths. This is one of the major disturbances Punjab has witnessed in recent years. But is Guru-ninda something unique to Sikhi? Guru-ninda takes place all the time, but unfortunately is not captured by the camera.
There have been more lucky blasphemers. They have not only imitated but desecrated Guru Sahibs in one way or the other. Some of them have refused to believe in the authority of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and have engaged in their own Gurudam in Punjab for many decades. They constitute a huge vote bank and hence have enjoyed the leniency from our Panthic leaders who have paid frequent visits to their deras seeking blessings from the ‘Satguru’.
Then there are those desecrators who, by using the Sikh terminologies of sangat, katha, kirtan, diwan, naam have tried to fill the spiritual vacuum among those Sikhs who feel neglected by the mainstream Sikhi. Their huge deras across Punjab with a huger membership reflect serious failures, in part of our organizations.
Punjab has been affected by dera endemic. It might be hard to acquire a college degree and secure a job to earn a living, but it is easier to start a dera and have a respectable number of followers who will ensure your decent living. And in most of the instances such an enterprise has proven to be successful. This is a business which will hardly fail, ensuring enormous profit.
Then there are subtle but dangerous desecrators. They look like us, talk of mainstream Sikhi, but don’t miss a chance to sting the Sikhs of their principles. With their anti-Sikh writings they instill confusion and distress in the panth. The first desecrator imitates Guru Gobind Singh ji and prepares his jaam using Rooh Afza. The second one ridicules the concept of amrit and claims that Guru Sahib could have put jaggery instead of pataase while preparing amrit. He refuses to believe in his Guru’s amrit. The first one declares that he is not a Sikh and writes his own maryada. The second one claims to be a Sikh but refuses to follow the Guru and ridicules the panthic maryada. He declares gurbani as ‘koor kabaar’ (trash) and denigrates the Ardas. But he is lucky. There is no camera to capture his blasphemy. And his pile of blasphemous writings becomes a subject of interpretation.
There is not much difference between the two. The second one is making space for the first one to flourish and strengthen his roots. Guru-ninda in any form should not be tolerated. If people want to establish their spiritual businesses, they are welcome to do so, but not in the expense of Sikh principles.
Sikhs have had enough. Enough of being on guard all the time. Enough of proving that we are not a part of another religion. Enough of being a target of mockery and cheap laughs. Sikhs are tired of this nagging. Every now and then Sikhs are faced with an awkward situation. On one side there is insensitive media that has little knowledge of the basic principles of Sikhism. The erroneous statements made about Sikhism by the media covering the latest controversy have proved this beyond any doubt. And on the other side we have Sikh leaders who are inarticulate and incapable of coping with any issue meticulously. It is distressing to see a dynamic and prosperous Quam that has contributed so much to the nation being put through these unpleasant situations.
Both the pen and the sword are now drawn. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but it’s the sword that has always defined the fate of the great civilizations.

The sevadars of the blog don't agree with this 'hardliner' term this is being used for people who have love for the panth and want something done against these pakhandi babe. I remind the sangat that the article below is a news article and may be biased. I do not agree with the term 'hardliners'.

Sikh hardliners plan to form suicide squads

21 May, 2007
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR:

Reports from Sirsa suggested security of the Dera has been increased. Followers have responded to the clergy's demand by announcing blood donation camps apart from refusing to vacate the deras. Though Dera followers are gripped by panic, the sect continued to send peace signals. Meanwhile, hardliners like Simranjit Singh Mann's Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Khalsa Panchayat and Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle groups along with 11 other Sikh organisations, in a meeting at Muktsar on Sunday, decided to form suicide squads to close down the deras of Sacha Sauda and stop the activities of the its followers. Mandhir Singh, spokesman of the Sikh bodies, said that the suicide squad (marjivade) would carry on the task of uprooting all Sacha Sauda deras in Punjab. At another meeting held in Amritsar to decide on the three-day ultimatum given on the Dera issue, the five Sikh high priests gave a bandh call for May 22 apart from staging a protest march from Fatehgarh Sahib to the governor of Punjab. This was disclosed by Akal Takht Jatheder Joginder Singh Vedanti after the meeting at Amritsar. The decision of the clergy did not win favour from the extremist elements, who rejected what these "soft measures" and left the meeting for Gurdwara Manji Sahib, brandishing swords and raising slogans. Apparently timing the action to assuage the feelings of Sikhs ahead of the crucial meeting at Amritsar, the Punjab government earlier in the day registered an FIR under Section 295A of IPC against the Dera Sacha Sauda chief at Bathinda for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs by wearing clothes similar to Guru Gobind Singh. The case has been registered in the Kotwali Police Station of Bathinda on the complaint of Khalsa Diwan Rajinder Singh. The high priests' meeting also witnessed an attack on television crews when they tried to film an armed policeman in civil dress being detected by activists of a radical organisation. A few cameramen and photographers were manhandled and chased by the hardliners. While section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in Amritsar, a security ring around deras in Punjab has been thrown by the government. In a late evening meeting, the government decided to ensure peace during the bandh on Tuesday. A government spokesman said they felt a bit relieved as the Akal Takht Jatheder had kept appealing for peace.

Takht calls for Punjab bandh

*Seeks closure of deras by May 27*

Rejects dera chief’s apology

Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, jathedar, Akal Takht, addresses devotees at Akal Takht in Amritsar, May 20

Akal Takht today took an unprecedented decision to give a call for complete Punjab bandh tomorrow (May 22) in protest against the blasphemous acts of Dera Sacha Sauda chief, apart from serving yet another ultimatum to close down all its branches, including the one at Salabatpura in Bathinda by May 27.
Pronouncing the “Gurmata” from the rostrum of Akal Takht, Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti said the next course of action would be announced on May 31, if the decisions taken by the Sikh clergy today were not implemented in toto.
The Sikh clergy who listened to the representatives of various Sikh organisations before passing “Gurmata” also rejected an apology tendered by Dera Sacha Sauda chief. They described it (apology) as a mere eyewash. They said the feelings of the Sikhs were greatly hurt with the blasphemous acts of dera chief which they won’t tolerate. They, however, urged the Sikhs to exercise restraint and remain peaceful during the proposed Punjab bandh.
The “Gurmata” was signed by jathedars of all four Takhts, including Vedanti, Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Tarlochan Singh, Iqbal Singh, Jathedars of Akal Takht, Damdama Sahib, Kesgarh Sahib and Patna Sahib and head Granthi, Hazoor Sahib, Partap Singh, respectively.
In yet another significant decision, Akal Takht pronounced that a sub-committee, to be formed by the Sikh clergy would meet the Prime Minister, the President and the Union home minister to request for the speedy trial of the dera chief by the CBI in connection with a number of criminal cases pending against the dera before May 30.
The Sikh clergy also decided to flag off a Sikh jatha from Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib on May 31, which would submit a memorandum to the governors of Punjab and Haryana for taking strict action against the controversial Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
Earlier, whispering started in the meeting of the Sikh clergy when advisor to Chief Minister Daljit Singh Cheema entered the Akal Takht venue. They said Cheema should have avoided the meeting since he was a cabinet minister and advisor to the Chief Minister and did not represent any Sikh organisation. Those attending the meeting apprehended that Cheema was deputed by the Chief Minister to keep a watch on Sikh clergy so that they could not take any decision, which would put the state government in difficult situation.
However, senior leaders of many Sikh organisations appreciated the role of the Badal government in booking the dera chief. President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Parmjit Singh Sarna, SAD (A) senior vice-president Daljit Singh Bittu and convener of Akal Purkh ki Fauj Jaswinder Singh Advocate, appreciated the decision taken by the Sikh clergy.
Earlier, Sikh youths who were getting restive due to the delaying of decision taken by Akal Takht raised slogans against Jathedars. A few youths raised slogans like “Bhinderanwale zindabad”. However, when the Sikh high priests pronounced the “Gurmata” the congregation seemed satisfied and raised slogans like “Akal Takht mahan hai, Sikh Panth di shaan hai”.

ASI beaten up in front of Akal Takht
Tribune lensman among 3 mediapersons injured

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 20

Sikh youths severely beat up an Assistant Sub-Inspector when his revolver fell down in front of Akal Takht, here today. Mediapersons, especially photographers, also earned the wrath of the agitated Sikh youths when they tried to click pictures. The incident occurred when the Sikh clergy was holding a meeting at Akal Takht Secretariat.
Senior journalist Narinder Sharma, who had been covering Amritsar for the past 25 years said that such an unsavoury incident had not occurred even during the peak of militancy. Except for the killing of a DIG before Operation Blue Star, nobody had ever beaten up a police official or mediaperson earlier.
The youths were protesting as to how a police official was allowed to enter the Darbar Sahib complex with a service revolver when the Task Force of the SGPC had been stopping Sikhs from entering the complex with weapons.
As usual, a large number of policemen in mufti had been posted in the Darbar Sahib complex to keep watch on the situation. The police had taken elaborate precautionary measures outside the complex.
Interestingly, a SSP was also standing along with the ASI when he was beaten up. The incident occurred when a large number of devotees had gathered at Akal Takht awaiting the decision of the Sikh clergy.
The Tribune lensman Rajiv Sharma was among three mediapersons who sustained minor injuries in the melee. Other photographers who sustained injuries included Narinder Nannu, a photographer of AFP, Manish Sharma of Reuters.
Later, Manjit Singh Bhoma, president, All-India Sikh Students Federation, apologised to the media for the unsavoury situation. However, he said that the media should also honour the feelings of the Sikh Sangat and restrain from projecting the Sikh agitation against the Dera Sacha Sauda.
Though a speaker called for boycotting a section of the electronic media for presenting a wrong picture of the agitation by the Sikhs, yet many persons from the congregation stood to oppose the move.

Edict puts govt in a fix

Prabhjot Singh

Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, May 20

Punjab continues to be on a boil for the seventh day today. Fragility of the peace at the surface after a day free of any major incident of violence became apparent when the hardcore Sikh organisations tried to wrest back the initiative after the Sikh clergy pronounced its second edict against the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda this evening.
Hopes of peace raised by last nights’ regret expressed by the Dera over incidents in the region since its May 13 advertisement in newspapers vanished soon after the second edict came.
The Sikh clergy has put the Punjab Government on a severe test again. The edict given from Akal Takht this evening wants a State bandh on May 22, all Sacha Sauda Deras closed by May 27, and inquiries by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into various cases against the Dera completed by May 30. The edict also wants the Sikh sangat to take out a procession from Fatehgarh Sahib to Punjab and Haryana Raj Bhavans in Chandigarh on May 31 to demand action against the Dera chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.
Rejection of the deep regret expressed by the Dera over the incidents that followed its May 13 advertisement in newspapers has put the Punjab Government in a spot.
The immediate task for the Government is to reinforce its law and order machinery, first for the May 22 bandh followed by stepping up vigil to secure Sacha Sauda Deras in the State as some of the hardcore organisations have threatened to demolish all such Deras even before the deadline given by the edict.
The government reaction to the latest edict was not immediately known as insiders maintained the State machinery would have to act with utter restraint as on one hand it cannot afford to overlook the edict while at the same time it has to maintain law and order besides securing life and property of the followers of the Dera concentrated mainly in the Malwa belt.
The Union Government, sources reveal, was also watching the developments minutely. Efforts have been stepped up to persuade the Dera Sacha Sauda to tender a public apology to assuage the hurt feelings of Sikhs.
Both the Punjab and Haryana Governments are being issued advisories from time to time by the Union Home Ministry to diffuse the situation. But efforts so far have fallen flat and there appears no let up in the anger some hardcore Sikh organisations are nursing against the Dera chief and his followers.
The law and order agencies are worried on an additional account that deadlines given by the Akal Takht are close to the anniversary of Bluestar which falls in the first week of June.
This also happens to be the time when a substantial percentage of peasantry is free after harvesting of wheat crop. And the Sikh organisations draw their main support from the rural areas.

Around 7,000 followers, who have been camping inside the dera, have also made their security arrangements. They have collected a huge stock of stones, lathis and sticks. Some of the followers were carrying firearms.

Sacha Sauda followers fleeing state
Bathinda,
May 20

Families of Dera Sacha Sauda followers have started fleeing their homes in Punjab fearing attacks in the wake of sectarian clashes that erupted on Monday over the alleged sacrilege by their leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
An uneasy calm prevailed today in predominantly Sauda neighbourhoods here with dozens of families slipping away to escape possible clashes.
“This conflict between Dera Sacha Sauda followers and the rest of the Sikh community has caused a lot of loss to everyone. Amid clashes and conflict, confusion and ambiguity prevail and that is why people are fleeing the area,” said Sanjeev Kumar, shocked as he woke up to a deserted neighbourhood on Saturday.
Sauda followers accuse the state government of having an inherent bias against them.
“The situation is Bathinda is tense. Families are leaving in large numbers. The situation is volatile. There is not much we can say about it, but families leaving Bathinda is unfortunate,” said Yogesh Batis, a resident of another Sauda-dominated neighbourhood elsewhere in the city.
Ram Rahim Singh on late Saturday night issued a statement regretting the incidents of the past few days, including the publication of the advertisement in which he appeared dressed up as Guru Gobind Singh that led to the tension.
However, his ‘regret’ has not pacified Sikh leaders who are meeting today to chalk out their future strategy. — ANI
