Punjab The Latest as it comes

Dera row: Dullo, Bhattal express concern
Mohali, May

The Congress party in Punjab has expressed concern over the sudden turn of events in the state during the past one week, following controversy over Dera Sacha Sauda and other religious organisations.
Shamsher Singh Dullo, PPCC president, and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, leader of opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, termed the imbroglio as unfortunate and detrimental for the peace of the state.
They said every Indian was free to follow any faith or religion and it was the duty of the government to protect every religion and lives of its citizens.
Both leaders said it was the responsibility of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to play an impartial role to maintain communal harmony and secularism so that law and order prevailed. Nobody wanted to see the days of militancy once again, they added.
The Congress leaders appealed to all religious leaders, political parties, religious organisations and others concerned to rise above affiliations and petty politics, and to exercise great restraint at this critical juncture.
Dullo and Bhattal cautioned that in such a charged atmosphere, nobody should make provocative statements, which could break the secular fabric of brotherhood and mutual trust.
They further emphasised the Congress had always stood for secularism, peace, brotherhood and communal harmony, and even its leaders from time to time sacrificed their lives for this cause and for unity and integrity of the country.
