Dera chief’s security withdrawn

Chandigarh, May 19: The Punjab government has withdrawn the security of head of Dera Sacha Sauda Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh whose followers clashed with Sikhs across the state. Disclosing this here today, Punjab police chief N P S Aulakh told reporters here that "the police protection given to the Dera Sacha Sauda has been withdrawn." "The four PSOs (Personal Security Officials) provided by the previous Government to the head of Dera Sacha Sauda has been withdrawn," he said. The gunmen for the personal security of Dera head were provided by the previous Congress government headed by Amarinder Singh, Aulakh said. However, the state police chief kept mum when mediapersons asked him whether the state government is of the opinion that there is no threat perception to the head of Dera Sacha Sauda. Punjab Chief Minister`s Media Advisor Harcharan Singh Bains, who accompanied the DGP, however sought to justify the withdrawal of security saying Haryana police had given enough security to the Dera head. Meanwhile, coming under attack from opposition and other groups, the Punjab govt shunted the Bathinda SSP Naresh Arora out of office, replacing him with Naunihal Singh. The former has been appointed Assistant IG, Chandigarh. The administration cited Arora’s slow reaction as the primary cause for his transfer. The move comes as allegations crop against the ruling Akalis, accusing them of fanning the violence for political gains. Several parts of Punjab witnessed sporadic sectarian strife after some newspapers carried an advertisement of Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh attired in a dress purportedly resembling that of Sikh religious leader Guru Gobind Singh.
